About the Campbell Adult and Online Education (AOE) Master of Arts in Teaching Program
The mission of the Master of Arts in Teaching program is to prepare candidates for the everchanging 21st Century Classroom with a focus on the learner and the learning process. An emphasis on community and faith engagement as a part of the “village” to educate students undergirds this program of study.
Through Individualized projects, assignments, and clinical internship experiences teacher education candidates can learn research-based instructional methods which aligns to all developmental aspects of the growing and continuing learner. Practical application within these internships affords the candidate an opportunity to become the reflective practitioner to make sound educational decisions about learning in a classroom.
This program is intended for college and university graduates who may or may not have formal education coursework or training. Students who complete this program would fulfill some eligibility requirements for the initial North Carolina Teacher License.

- B-K, Elementary Special Education
- K-12, Secondary Education, Middle School
Master of Arts in Teaching Course Format
Campbell Online offers the first 8 courses 100% online. The two remaining courses require in-person internship experience in a classroom.

Approved Licensure Areas
Candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree but are not licensed to teach in the public schools must meet the requirements for the North Carolina initial licensure. Candidates must have 24 hours in the content area. The following are the Licensure Areas that Campbell University is approved to offer by the State of North Carolina:

Program Director
Dr. Chris Godwin is assistant dean and chair of the Professional Education Department in the School of Education & Human Sciences at Campbell University . He recently served as president of the North Carolina Association for Colleges of Teacher Educators and as an appointed member of the North Carolina Principal Fellows Program Commission. Dr. Godwin has received the Distinguished Service Award from the North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Campbell University School of Education & Human Sciences. He adds that the most rewarding aspect of his career was teaching eighth grade students at Dunn Middle School.

North Carolina Teacher Licensing Requirements
Every state has unique licensure requirements for educators. For the most up-to-date information on North Carolina teacher licensing requirements, please visit the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction website.
Note: If you currently hold a Residency License in the Public Schools of North Carolina, the MAT program fulfills that requirement and can be completed easily within the three-year limited residency license period. (Residency Licensure is renewable twice, making it a three-year license. Candidates must complete an EPP program within that time period in order to be recommended for the initial NC license.
Admissions Requirements
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited US institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
- Satisfy Campbell University General Admission Requirements by submitting a completed application.
- No standardized tests such as GREs are required for full admission.
