Each year, this scholarship provides four $250.00 scholarships to provide support for active duty US Marine Corps or Navy members who are E7 or below in rank and are stationed at Camp Lejeune, MCAS Cherry Point, or MCAS New River. Members can receive this scholarship once in their academic careers with Campbell University.
This scholarship is generously supported by a donor who attended Campbell University while stationed at Camp Lejeune with the 2D Marine Division. After completing his enlistment he transferred to East Carolina University, studied at the College of Business, earning both a BSBA in ’95 and MBA in ’97. He spent all of his career working in the Information Technology field and retired from UPS after a 20-year career.
The donor wishes to establish this fund to recognize Dr. Louis Eckstein, Jr., who was born in Sylva, NC in 1934, and spent most of his childhood and teenage years in and around the Great Smoky Mountains. He attended West Carolina College – now Western Carolina University (WCU) for two years before joining the Marines in 1955, reporting to boot camp at Parris Island. Successive training came at Camp Lejeune (Infantry), Cherry Point (Airman School), and Memphis (Aviation Technical School). The remainder of Louis’ service was at Yokota Air Base near Tokyo, Japan. In 1959, Louis transitioned to the Marine Corps Reserve, and entered North Carolina State College, finishing with a degree in Forestry in 1961. After working with Champion in eastern North Carolina, Louis returned to school and completed a master’s degree in forestry at Duke University in 1968. His teaching career began at WCU while working on his Ph.D. in Business from the University of Georgia. He moved his family to Clinton, SC, and taught at Presbyterian College before moving to East Carolina University in 1979. Louis retired from ECU in 2003 following a fulfilling tenure with the College of Business.
The 2024 application is closed. The 2025 cycle will open early 2025.
